Lufthansa Technik Malta is growing its footprint and Boeing 787 services with a new hangar that will be dedicated to base maintenance services and cabin modifications on the aircraft platform.
The MRO provider announced March 12 that it will build a new 6,400 m2 (approximately 69,000 ft.2) hangar attached to its existing buildings that will provide space for one widebody and three parking spots for narrowbodies. Scheduled to open in fall 2026, the new hangar will increase Lufthansa Technik Malta’s total hangars to four.
According to Harald Gloy, chief operating officer at Lufthansa Technik (LHT), the expansion in Malta alongside the company’s previously announced construction of two new facilities in Portugal and Canada will strengthen its global network.
“Lufthansa Technik Malta will be the first location worldwide where Lufthansa Technik will carry out work on the 787 as a Boeing-licensed Service Center for cabin modifications,” says Gloy. “This will not only create new options for our customers, but also highly qualified jobs in Malta.”
LHT says the expanded facility will create 70 new jobs, bringing its total staff in Malta to 650.
The company signed a license agreement at the Farnborough International Airshow in July 2024 covering 787 cabin modifications. The license authorizes it to design new cabin interiors, provide the corresponding engineering, carry out the integration and manage the certification process. LHT says it is the only MRO provider in the world authorized to perform this combination of work for the 787. The company has been involved in 787 interior modifications since 2015.
Lufthansa Technik Malta plans to start its first 787 cabin modification this year at one of the site’s existing hangars. LHT is not yet disclosing details on what the modification will entail.
Lufthansa Technik Malta is LHT’s European Center of excellence for widebody base maintenance services. The company branched into Boeing 787 heavy checks in 2023 and it completed its first base maintenance event in April 2024.
