Boeing has designated Lufthansa Technik as its first licensed service center for 787 cabin modifications.
The OEM, which offers its own cabin modification design, integration and certification services, says it selected Lufthansa Technik as the first licensed interior service center due to the fleet’s expansion and lifecycle needs.
Lufthansa Technik and Boeing expect the first 787 service agreement mod to start in 2025.
The companies announced the agreement at the Farnborough Airshow on July 22 and will hold initial discussions with potential customers after that.
“Lufthansa Technik has been involved in 787 interior modifications since 2015, starting with VIP modifications” and more recently with Lufthansa airline’s fleet, says Doug Backhus, Boeing' vice president of Cabin, Modifications and Maintenance. “This experience and expertise made them a strong choice for Boeing.”
The designation will enable the MRO to design a new interior, provide associated engineering work, perform the upgrade work and certify the projects.
Lufthansa Technik’s facility performed its first 787 base maintenance event in April.
Asked whether the MRO would perform the 787 cabin modifications at its site in Malta, a Lufthansa Technik spokesperson said it will provide the services across its global network of facilities, with Malta being one option.
Aviation Week Network Fleet Discovery shows 1,217 787s will be in service this year, the majority of which are in the 787-9 variant.
