AIESL and HAL sign memorandum of understanding Feb. 12.
Several new defense-related MRO developments in India are driving more growth for the country's aerospace and defense sector.
Earlier this month, Air India Engineering Services Limited (AIESL) signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate with Indian aerospace and defense company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on MRO services for civil aircraft. The partnership is focused on strengthening India’s aviation sector, enhancing indigenous MRO capabilities and driving investment in advanced technologies.
The deal will enable AIESL and HAL to offer a wider range of MRO services, including heavy maintenance, repairs and overhauls, at a reduced costs while creating new job opportunities for veterans and recent graduates. The companies will also collaborate on promoting innovation in engineering and research.
Meanwhile, Indian aerospace and defense company Tata Advanced Systems is establishing a defense MRO in Bengaluru to support the Indian Air Force’s Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules fleet. The MRO, which will operate in collaboration with Lockheed Martin, will leverage the region’s infrastructure, skilled workforce and industry-friendly policies.
Tata and Lockheed signed a memorandum of understanding in September 2024 to deepen their collaboration on the C-130J Super Hercules, including potential expansion of manufacturing and assembly operations. However, local manufacturing and assembly of the platform is subject to approval from both the U.S. and Indian governments, as well as whether Lockheed Martin is awarded the Indian Air Force’s Medium Transport Aircraft contract.
Last week, the Indian Air Force selected GE Aerospace to maintain the engines of its Boeing AH-64E Apache attack helicopters. The five-year agreement includes provision of spare parts.
