FARNBOROUGH—Korean Air has agreed to order 20 Boeing 777-9s here at the Farnborough Airshow, a significant boost for Boeing’s much-delayed widebody program.

The 777-9s are set to be delivered from 2028 although the order has not been firmed yet.

“I have complete confidence in Boeing,” Korean Air chairman Walter Cho said July 22. “If I was not assured, I would not have ordered the aircraft."

Korean Air also committed to order 20 787-10s with options for 10 more. The airline already has a firm backlog of 17 787s on order.

The South Korean flag-carrier had also placed a big widebody order with Airbus, back in March, for six A350-900s and 27 -1000s, but Cho said that the 777-9 and the A350-1000 “will serve a different purpose.”

When firmed, the Korean Air order will push the 777X backlog to 501 aircraft. Boeing earlier in July received Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) for the 777-9 and plans to deliver the first aircraft before the end of 2025.
