FARNBOROUGH—Japan Airlines (JAL) has placed a firm order for 10 Boeing 787-9s and secured options for 10 more, the airline announced on the first day of Farnborough Airshow.
The aircraft will be delivered between 2028 and 2031, says Yukio Nakagawa, the flag-carrier’s senior vice president of procurement.
JAL first announced the plans to take more 787s in March as part of a broader deal for a total of 42 new aircraft that also included 21 Airbus A350-900s and 11 A321neos. The airline was the first to take delivery of a 787 in 2012 after contributing to the widebody's development and has a fleet of 50 of the type in service.
Nakagawa said some of the new aircraft will be used for growth while others will replace the existing fleet. JAL is seeing growth in markets such as India, other Asian countries and North America. The economics of flying to Europe has been much more challenging by the closure of Russian airspace.
