Vienna International Airport (VIE) is continuing its post-pandemic resurgence, with a series of new air services and ongoing infrastructure upgrades.
The airport, which handled 29.5 million passengers in 2023, has not only surpassed key milestones but is also preparing for further growth in emerging markets. VIE’s recent successes include the addition of 34 new or returning routes, contributing to its network of 203 global destinations served by 65 airline partners.
“We’ve seen remarkable growth over the past year,” VIE’s vice president for aviation development, Belina Neumann, tells Aviation Week. “Among our major achievements are new long-haul routes like Boston with Austrian Airlines, Tokyo Haneda with ANA and Shenzhen with Hainan Airlines. In Europe, cities like Manchester, Birmingham, Bremen and Rovaniemi have further strengthened our position as a key connecting hub.”
Neumann says the airport's recovery is testament to strong airline partnerships. This summer, VIE recorded its busiest months ever, with passenger numbers breaking records in June, July and August 2024.
Looking ahead, the airport is targeting high-potential markets, including China, Saudi Arabia, India and North America. “Our route development strategy is focused on collaboration with local tourist boards like the Vienna Tourist Board and the Austrian National Tourist Board,” Neumann adds.

“We’re actively engaging with travel agents and tour operators through roadshows and events to promote Vienna in these key markets. Additionally, we provide airlines with in-depth data analysis to make the business case for adding new routes to Vienna.”
Beyond route expansion, the airport is making substantial infrastructure investments to keep pace with evolving passenger needs. A major terminal extension, set to be completed by 2027, will add 70,000 m2 (753,470 ft.2) of space, enhancing both capacity and the overall passenger experience. “This new terminal space will integrate state-of-the-art facilities aimed at improving efficiency and comfort,” Neumann says. “At the same time, we’re committed to sustainability, with 50% of our electricity already generated from photovoltaic plants and plans to meet our climate goals ahead of the 2030 deadline.”
VIE is also embracing digital solutions and innovations, including biometric check-in, mobile flight information and autonomous wheelchairs for passengers with reduced mobility.
