Vienna Airport Pursues Network Expansion Across Southern Asia

Vienna Airport (VIE) served over 31.7 million passengers in 2024, marking a 7.4% increase from the previous year and surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Located just 18 km (11 mi.) from Austria’s capital, the airport connects travelers to more than 195 destinations through partnerships with over 72 airlines.

Recent route expansions have bolstered VIE’s international network, particularly in the Asian market. Hainan Airlines relaunched its Shenzhen service in May 2024 and added flights to Chengdu in December with a 3X-weekly service. Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) also resumed its year-round Tokyo service in August 2024.

Connectivity to Europe and the Middle East has grown with SKY Express launching 4X-weekly flights to Athens, and Air Arabia introducing 4X-weekly flights to Sharjah, both starting in December 2024. EasyJet will debut a daily direct service to Milan in March 2025, and Condor will enhance its Frankfurt offerings, including stationing an aircraft at VIE this summer.

From June, Singapore Airlines’ subsidiary Scoot will also begin a 3X-weekly service to Singapore, offering onward connections through Singapore Changi International Airport (SIN). These new routes position VIE to surpass 32 million passengers in 2025.

To accommodate growing demand, VIE is undergoing a €420 million ($428 million) south terminal expansion, slated for completion in 2027. The project will add modernized security checks, expanded waiting areas, and new facilities, reinforcing Vienna Airport’s status as a premier European gateway.
