Doha’s Hamad International Airport (DOH) said annual point-to-point passenger traffic rose at a faster rate than transfer traffic for the first time in 2024, indicating Qatar is becoming more of a destination.
Overall, Qatar Airways’ base hub handled 52.7 million passengers in 2024, up 15% over 45 million passengers handled in 2023 and the most ever for a single year. Of those 52.7 million, 12 million were point-to-point passengers, up 16% over 2023.
"November and December 2024 witnessed Hamad International Airport's point-to-point passenger volumes surpassing those during the FIFA World Cup 2022, highlighting Doha's rising prominence as a premier destination,” DOH COO Hamad Ali Al-Khater said in a statement.
The airport said it ended 2024 connected to 197 destinations globally, with 55 airlines serving DOH. Airlines starting service to Doha in 2024 included India’s Akasa Air, China Southern Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Japan Airlines and Shenzhen Airlines.
“Passenger volumes showed strong growth across both eastern and western markets,” DOH said. “Traffic to China surged by 87% [year-over-year], while emerging markets in Asia, such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam, also demonstrated robust growth.”
Qatar Airways launched flights between DOH and Toronto Pearson International Airport in December, serving the route 3X-weekly. The service is being operated with a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft configured with 354 seats, including 42 in business class.
Other routes added by Qatar Airways from Doha in 2024 included Hamburg, Lisbon, Portugal, and Osaka, Japan.
