Keeping aircraft looking good can be done with a touch-up paint pen or a full paint job, which can be done as a stand-alone service or part of a broader maintenance package. Here are some options.
Touch-Ups At The Stroke Of A Pen
Sherwin-Williams Aerospace Coatings has made touch-ups simple--with pen in hand. Each JetPen comes with interchangeable chisel and brush tip options, in cases of 24, for primers, clear coats and a variety of topcoat colors for Sherwin-Williams systems, including Jet Glo® Express, SKYscapes and JetFlex. Designed for one-time use per pen, the user just breaks the seal, shakes it and begins applying it once the tip is saturated with paint. No special equipment or training is required.
Once activated, JetPen is applicable to multiple exterior and interior places on an aircraft. It meets a variety of touchup requirements, including small area corrosion control, scratches, dings and chips on general aviation, business jets, commercial airliners and military aircraft. The pens are disposable.
New Environmentally Designed Paint Hangar
Flying Colours Corp.’s paint hangar, which opened at the MRO’s Peterborough, Ontario headquarters in Canada last year, is designed for both functionality and sustainability.
Fully computerized and climate controlled, the facility incorporates a paint booth with 168 energy-efficient lights simulating natural daylight. The sanding, paint, purge and cure application sequence has a reduced environmental impact through intelligently designed air recirculation and exhaust systems, which decrease the amount of heat needed to operate and paint emissions released into the air.
At 138 ft. wide, 158 ft. deep, and with a 55-ft. tail height, the hangar can accommodate any business aircraft, up to executive versions of Airbus A220 and Boeing 737-900 airliners.
Environmentally Controlled Paint Hangar
StandardAero has completed more than 1,000 full paint projects over the past three decades from an environmentally controlled paint hangar at its Springfield, Illinois, corporate jet services facility.
StandardAero is a pioneer in modern aircraft paint booth design. The 62,000 sq. ft. Springfield paint shop, which can accommodate large cabin business jets, houses three bays. The first bay, incorporating its own wastewater treatment system, is dedicated to stripping, while the second bay which is devoted to priming and preparing the aircraft for paint application, has a cross-draft air flow system. Dedicated to painting only, the third bay incorporates a down draft airflow system and is heat and humidity controlled.
Paint Can Be Bundled
C&L Aviation Group's paint hangar is part of what the company terms its "one-stop solution" concept, incorporating maintenance, interior refurbishment, avionics, parts support and paint at its Bangor, Maine, location. Specializing in Gulfstream, Challenger, Hawker, Beechjet, (Embraer) Legacy and Cessna, the company is experienced with all major coating systems. Capabilities include sand or chemical stripping, corrosion control, composite repair, finish and detail work, metal polishing, livery/logo design, and after-paint weight and balance.
With one of the largest EPA-approved paint hangars on the U.S. East Coast, the 20,000 sq. ft. facility at Bangor International Airport in Maine can simultaneously accommodate two Gulfstream G550s or Bombardier Global Express jets. The hangar incorporates a three-zone airflow system, heated floor and an advanced temperature and humidity monitoring system to maintain an essential environment for a quality finish. The facility meets all current and anticipated local, state and federal environmental regulations.
