Amod Kelkar, Honda Aircraft senior vice president and chief commercial officer, joined the company in February 2021 as vice president of customer service. Kelkar previously held management positions with DeHavilland Aircraft of Canada, Bombardier and Doepker Industries.
Q: How are you finding the business aircraft market today?
A: Continued growth and demand in these sectors. I believe more people will begin to see business jets as productivity tools instead of luxury items and more businesses will utilize them as such. We’re also observing a growing preference for pre-owned aircraft.
I also think the future of business aircraft revolves around safety and sustainability, as well as becoming a socially responsible player in the industry.
We currently have a robust backlog extending over two-and-a-half years. As of May 2024, there are more than 250 aircraft in operation, with total flight hours surpassing 220,000 hr.
Q: Could you please give an update on the HondaJet Echelon? How is it coming along, and where is it in the development process?
A: The development of the HondaJet Echelon is well underway with detailed design marching toward our aircraft-level Critical Design Review this summer. Concurrently, we also have begun industrialization at many of our global suppliers with long-lead parts and components beginning fabrication. We are still targeting first flight in 2026 and type certification in 2028.
Q: Any updates on the HondaJet Elite II?
A: Auto-throttle is expected to achieve FAA certification in the coming months. At Honda Aircraft Company, we are always looking for ways to improve personal mobility through technological innovations and finding ways to match our products to the mission requirements for customers. Our goal is to continue to create new value in the industry, and we are constantly working on new technologies, including advanced aerodynamics, new structural material, automation and advanced controls.
Q: What is your biggest challenge today?
A: The challenges we face primarily involve optimizing resource allocation when Honda Aircraft Company continues to progress rapidly and steadily.
One is supply chain challenges. We work closely with suppliers to monitor and evaluate the global supply chain issues to develop a higher degree of agility going forward. We will ensure that we are offering an unparalleled customer service to meet each customer’s needs and requirements.
The other is talent resources. As we ramp up for the development of the HondaJet Echelon, we are eager to welcome more talent to our team.
