What’s On The Horizon For: Lima Airport
Lima Airport (LIM), also known as Jorge Chávez International Airport, welcomed more than 24.5 million passengers in 2024, offering flights to 60 destinations with 22 airline partners.
Amid a tourism surge, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism has identified improved air connectivity as a key driver of economic growth. To meet rising demand and establish Peru as a major regional hub, the airport is moving forward with its transformative Lima Airport City project. The first phase will boost passenger capacity to 30 million, with a further expansion targeting 40 million upon completion.
Speaking during Routes Americas 2025 in Nassau, Bahamas, chief commercial officer Norbert Onkelbach told Routes the airport is focused on growing services with existing airline partners by increasing flight frequencies and seat capacity, supported by its new runway. He added that discussions at the event and beyond are laying the groundwork for expanded hub connectivity across Latin America, North America, Canada and Europe.
“For us, this is a very important conference to speak to airlines and develop the traffic within Latin Americas,” Onkelbach said “We see ourselves as a hub that is growing in South America, connecting north and south.”
Recent wins for LIM include new international routes launched in 2024, such as LATAM Airlines Group’s flights to Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Rosario, Argentina. Turkish Airlines also announced it will begin service to Lima in June 2025.
Showcasing the airports air network potential through exhibiting at Routes Americas, Onkelbach said: “I found Routes Americas this year—like any year—always open but still intimate enough that you can speak to people, meet, and discuss things in a straightforward way.”
