Fiji Airways has formally joined Oneworld alliance as a full member, elevating it from the more limited Oneworld Connect status it held for about seven years.
The full membership gives Fiji Airways customers access to a greater range of alliance benefits from April 1. Fiji Airways became Oneworld’s first Connect member in 2018. The carrier was sponsored by Oneworld members American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Qantas.
Fiji Airways has service to Oneworld partner hubs in Hong Kong, Sydney and Tokyo, and it began operations to American’s Dallas-Fort Worth hub in December.
The Fijian carrier has also strengthened its links with American by adopting the U.S. airline’s AAdvantage program as its loyalty offering. Initial steps were taken last year.
The Fiji Airways Group has a jet fleet of four Airbus A330s, four A350-900s, one Boeing 737-800 and five 737-8s, according to the Aviation Week Network Fleet Discovery database. Its regional fleet comprises five ATR turboprops and four DHC-6-400s.
Fiji Airways is the fifth-largest carrier in the Southwest Pacific region as ranked by weekly seats, according to data from CAPA – Centre for Aviation and OAG Schedules Analyser. It is behind Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand, but ahead of other Pacific Island carriers.
Including Fiji Airways, Oneworld now has 14 full members. The next addition is due to be Oman Air. The Omani carrier was named as a member-designate in June 2022 and is listed on the Oneworld website as a future member.
Oneworld also has several affiliate carriers that are linked to its full members. Fiji Airways’ subsidiary Fiji Link will also join as a Oneworld affiliate.
