Avianca will open service between Managua Sandino International Airport (MGA) in Nicaragua and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Florida, growing its U.S. network further.
The MGA-FLL route will be flown daily with an Airbus A320 aircraft. Service will launch May 10. Avianca will compete with FLL-based Spirit Airlines on the route.
The Colombian carrier already operates to FLL from Bogota El Dorado International Airport (BOG) and also plans service from Medellin. FLL, located less than 30 mi. north of Miami International Airport (MIA), is seen as an alternative for passengers to the busy hub.
Avianca operates multiple daily frequencies between MGA and MIA.
The A320 that will fly the MGA-FLL route is configured to carry 180 passengers. The launch will come just weeks before Avianca opens 3X-weekly A320 seasonal service on another Central America-U.S. route connecting San Salvador, El Salvador, and Chicago O’Hare International Airport from June 3.
It also will open service between BOG and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in late May.
