TransNusa is launching a new scheduled service between Bali and Guangzhou, becoming the first Indonesian airline to operate the route, which is also designed to boost Australia-China connecting traffic.
The service will enable passengers from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport to connect via Bali’s Denpasar International Airport to Perth Airport—the forthcoming co-host of Routes Asia 2025—following the carrier’s earlier plans to add flights to the Western Australia gateway.
The new Bali-Guangzhou service will commence on April 13, operating four times per week using an Airbus A320 configured with 174 seats. Meanwhile, Bali-Perth flights will start on March 20, initially running three times per week before rising to daily from June 1. The service will become TransNusa’s only Australian route.
"With the launch of our new Bali-Guangzhou route, our passengers can now enjoy one of the fastest scheduled connecting flights to either Guangzhou or Perth via Bali, with a transit duration of either 1 hr. 30 min. or 2 hr. 35 min., depending on the day and time of the scheduled flights,” TransNusa CEO Bernard Francis says.
From April 13 through May 21, there will be three connecting flights from Guangzhou to Perth, while from Perth there will be two connecting flights via Bali to Guangzhou. “In addition to the connecting flight, with the launch of this new route, we hope to also provide tourists from China additional options to travel to … Bali,” Francis adds.
TransNusa was initially established in 2005, operating domestic flights in Indonesia. After ceasing operations in 2020 due to the pandemic, the airline was revived in 2022 following a change in ownership and management. It has since rebranded from an LCC to a premium service carrier.
The addition of Bali-Guangzhou will increase TransNusa’s mainland China network to five routes, complementing service from Jakarta to Guangzhou and Guiyang, and from Manado to Fuzhou and Guangzhou. It currently offers 17X-weekly roundtrip flights between Indonesia and China.
According to Sabre Market Intelligence data, O&D traffic between China and Perth totaled about 102,000 two-way passengers in 2024, with Guangzhou-Perth the third-largest city pair after Shanghai and Beijing.
China Southern Airlines offered nonstop Guangzhou-Perth seasonal flights between late November 2024 and mid-February 2025, while China Eastern Airlines operated a limited Shanghai Pudong-Perth service during this year’s Lunar New Year.
