Video: The Importance Of Female Representation In Aviation
Mary Wanke, President of Aviation Women Inspiring Next Generation (A-WING), speaks about the importance of female representation in the aviation industry during MRO Americas 2024.
The representation of women in the aviation industry is still below 10% in all job roles. However, there are certain areas where women excel and it's essential to recognize the reasons why they need to be highlighted in the industry. Additionally, it's equally important to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for women in the industry.
Even though there is a shortage of skilled workers in the aviation industry, the percentage of women working in aviation is "still low after 121 years".
Wanke said that the deficit included positions such as pilots, aviation lawyers, and logistics professionals.
"It's important to explore every avenue to attract talented workers, regardless of gender," she added.
A-WING is committed to promoting and supporting women in the aviation industry.
A-WING believes that working with the next generation is crucial to achieving this goal. To that end, A-WING mentors and networks with women who are currently working in the industry or are about to enter it.
Additionally, every year, A-WING attends the EAA with the funds it has raised.
Wanke explained that A-Wing supports girls and boys "by raising awareness of the unconscious bias that exists in the aviation industry" in the hope of creating a "more inclusive environment for the next generation".
What does the future hold for the aviation industry? A-WING's goal is to achieve a 25% growth of women in the industry in the next five to 10 years. There is a clear demand for new talent within the aviation sector, and the industry is looking for more diverse candidates from all backgrounds to fill the gaps and reach this goal.
