GENEVA—Leonardo unveiled a full-scale cabin mockup of its AW09 Agusta single-engine helicopter at the European Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition here, outfitted with a new VIP-corporate transport cabin layout.

The reveal serves as Leonardo’s introduction to its Agusta-branded line of helicopters. The AW09 was originally developed by Kopter Group and is awaiting certification following the group’s acquisition by Leonardo Helicopters in 2020.

“Being part of a team to bring a next-generation helicopter up to market is really something special,” said Richard Grant, an experimental test pilot for Kopter Group. “We’re working to raise the latest safety standards to bring an aircraft that’s easy to fly, easy to operate, but also has an enjoyable passenger experience.”

According to Leonardo, the AW09 will offer “generous” legroom inside the largest cabin in the single-engine class, with multiple seating configurations. At EBACE 2024, Leonardo also unveiled dedicated themes for the helicopter, including Desert Dawn, Cedar Woods, Ocean Twilight and Dark Cosmos.

After its anticipated service entry in 2025, the company says operators will be able to receive specialized technical service and maintenance support under “Agusta for You” program. Leonardo describes the AW09 as a “true digital helicopter” that will be capable of data transmission for technical support, scheduled maintenance and flight efficiency and safety capabilities.

In February 2024, Leonardo conducted the first flight of its fifth AW09 prototype, PS5, in pursuit of the European Union Aviation Safety’s CS-27 Small Rotorcraft standards. After Leonardo’s acquisition of Kopter Group, major changes were made to the AW09, including the switch to a Safran Arriel 2 engine.

With the addition of the VIP-corporate transport configuration, the helicopter is more versatile, potentially performing passenger transport, emergency medical services and security missions.

Leonardo says it has more than 100 preliminary sales contracts for the AW09 globally.
