Gallery: Boeing Showcases 737-9 EcoDemonstrator

Boeing is evaluating a new set of 20 discrete technologies on the latest aircraft to feature in the ecoDemonstrator program—a 737-9 on loan from Alaska Airways. ​​
Boeing’s collaboration with Hanwha is aiming at developing a more-efficient and low-profile beacon light, thus saving electric energy onboard and cutting aerodynamic drag.
The LED-technology beacon features 360-degree visibility and is only 0.5-in. thick. Tested on a window plug, it is normally mounted underneath the aircraft’s fuselage.
The two sensors help measure concentrations of CO2, water vapor and methane for climate forecasting purposes. The tubes are linked to the aircraft’s air conditioning and pressurization system and then to the NOAA’s analyzer boxes.
A pitot-like sensor and a flush sensor capture outside air and contribute to a measurement campaign by the U.S. National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Thermal neutron detectors are sensing atmospheric magnetic fields, thus quantifying the complexity of the electromagnetic atmosphere.
Touchscreen control display units (the two portrait-oriented screens closest to the throttles) are replacing conventional push-button radio and transponder panels. The improvement saves weight and space, and cuts maintenance costs stemming from jamming buttons.
Recycled carbon-fiber panels (right) are replacing conventional side walls. Lighter and more sustainable, they help save 30 lb. on a 737-9 and provide better noise dampening.
The yellow and grey wireless sensor was developed by Crane Aerospace in collaboration with Boeing and measures tire pressure in real time.

The aircraft is being used as a testbed for more environmentally friendly technologies, as well as some that may cut operating costs. It is simultaneously used for scientific measurement campaigns.
