RIO DE JANEIRO—South Africa-based Denel and Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer have agreed to a framework for future industrial collaboration on the KC-390, a possible prelude to a future order from Johannesburg.
The memorandum of understanding (MOU) opens a path for Denel to manufacture aerostructures of the tanker-transport, plus perform maintenance, repair and overhaul services.
“Denel is well-equipped and is a suitably qualified industrial partner to undertake the necessary tasks envisaged for the collaboration and will significantly enhance the strategic airlift support capabilities on the African continent,” said Chris Boshoff, CEO of Aerospace at Denel.
The agreement comes as Embraer closes in on a deal with South Africa. The Brazilian company demonstrated the KC-390 to the South African air force in 2023. Embraer executives said in September 2024 that they were in advanced talks for a possible sale to South Africa. And a delegation of South African air force leaders visited Embraer’s KC-390 factory in Brazil six months ago.
“We are looking forward to providing South Africa with the most advanced aircraft in its category while cooperating with South Africa’s defense industry,” said Fabio Caparica, vice president of contracts at Embraer Defense & Security.
