From The Archives: Lockheed And Pratt Test ASTOVL Concept

From the Archives 30 years ago in Aviation Week on March 6, 1995, the cover featured an 86% scale aircraft model developed by Lockheed being evaluated with a shaft-coupled lift fan propulsion system developed by Pratt & Whitney, Allison and Rolls-Royce.

Lockheed's Joint Advanced Strike Technology (JAST) team conducted the tests at Pratt’s West Palm Beach, Florida, facility as a prelude to wind tunnel testing.

The tests were part of the Advanced Research Projects Agency's Advanced Short Takeoff Vertical Landing (ASTOVL) program, which was folded into the JAST effort in 1994. JAST would subsequently be renamed the Joint Strike Fighter program, which yielded the F-35.
