What’s On The Horizon For: Aalborg Airport
Aalborg Airport, a Routes 360 member, shared its recent route successes and key target markets for European growth during Routes Europe 2024.
Located in the north of Denmark Aalborg Airport (AAL) serve the central Jutland and northward market, encompassing approximately 2.4 million potential passengers. The airport offers more than 35 nonstop destinations with up to 30 daily departures, serving around 1.5 million passengers annually.
In the past year, AAL has secured numerous new routes with various airline partners, bolstering its connections across Europe. Norwegian inaugurated the first direct flight to Madeira from AAL on Feb. 6, 2024, operating every Tuesday until April, with plans to resume regular service in 2025. The LCC will also commence flights to Nice, in southern France, from June 2024, increasing its total destinations served to six with 60 departures per week.
Connections to Spain have also expanded, with Norwegian extending operations and increasing frequencies to Alicante and Barcelona. Ryanair launched its inaugural flight to Girona along the Costa Brava coast, operating twice weekly from April 1. Air Greenland has also added Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, to the summer schedule with nine flights scheduled from June 25 to Aug. 20.
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has allocated additional capacity to the direct Oslo route from AAL starting in April, with twice-daily departures to meet growing demand.
Discussing AAL’s key target markets during Routes Europe 2024, Annika Liljenberg, director of route development, explained that one priority is to establish better connectivity to Sweden and Norway. Iceland and Greenland are also very important markets for passenger demand and meeting cargo needs.
Another strategic ambition for AAL is to enhance connections to hub airports, particularly in Germany, and to cities across Europe such as Paris, northern Italy, and various locations within the UK.
As a first-time exhibitor at Routes Europe, Liljenberg said: “It’s our first time having a stand at Routes, which is something we have really enjoyed.” AAL plans to promote its latest developments and potential services through its Aalborg Airport Routes 360 profile, aiming to increase awareness of AAL and its catchment area.
