Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris is to launch a new weekly non-stop service to Los Angeles from Uruapan in Michoacán state from October 2, 2012. This will be the first regular international scheduled service from the Mexican city’s Lic. y Gen. Ignacio López Rayón National Airport, which has had only limited flight operations over the past 30 years.
Volaris is currently the only airline serving the Mexican city after launching an at least daily service from Tijuana in October 2008. Previously Aeromexico and more recently Transportes Aeromar had provided links to the capital Mexico City but the latter ended its route and additional flights to Lazaro Cardenas in spring 2008. Lineas Aereas Azteca had also served the Uruapan – Tijuana route prior to its closure.
Uruapan will become Volaris’ seventh Mexican destination to be served from Los Angeles International Airport. The airline already flies to Aguascalientes, Culiacán, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Morelia and Zacatecas from the California city. Its network now comprises 64 routes linking 25 cities in Mexico and eight in the United States. In the US, the airline serves Chicago, Fresno, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Oakland, Orlando, San Diego and San Jose.
Volaris expects to secure notable leisure traffic on this new route. Uruapan is one of the oldest cities in Mexico and its main natural attraction is the Cupatitzio River along which are located a number of tourist attractions. The National Park Eduardo Ruiz is home of La Rodilla del Diablo, the source of the river which courses through the city and out toward La Tzaráracua waterfalls on the southern outskirts of the city, and flows into the Presa Infernillo and eventually the Pacific Ocean. With a population of 315,379 in the municipality, according to a 2010 census, there is also likely to be outward demand to the US.
