Royal Schiphol Group has expanded its stake in Australia’s Brisbane Airport Corporation Holdings (BACH), taking its shareholding over the 20% threshold.

The move guarantees the Dutch group a second board seat in the future. The latest acquisition—from another unnamed shareholder in BACH—increases its stake by 0.52% to 20.13%. Royal Schiphol Group has been a shareholder in Brisbane Airport (BNE) since 1997.

The share purchase comes as BNE prepares for significant growth, driven by rising passenger demand and the upcoming 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In 2024, the airport handled 17.5 million domestic and 6.2 million international passengers, increasing from 16.6 million and 4.8 million, respectively, in the previous year.

Capacity at Brisbane Airport is also rebounding, with January 2025 departure seats reaching approximately 1.26 million, representing 96% of pre-pandemic levels, according to analysis of OAG Schedules Analyser data.

In October 2023, BNE commenced work on an A$5 billion ($3 billion) upgrade program to prepare its infrastructure ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games. Known as Future BNE, the scheme will see the implementation of more than 150 individual projects to improve the existing domestic and international terminals, as well as the construction of a new terminal.

“The business outlook for Brisbane Airport is positive, with a growing market and the 2032 Olympics and Paralympic Games taking place in Brisbane,” a statement from Royal Schiphol Group says. “Over the years, Royal Schiphol Group and Brisbane Airport have worked closely together, delivering benefits by sharing knowledge and expertise.”

BACH was granted a 50-year airport management lease for BNE in July 1997, plus the option to renew the lease for another 49 years.
