A Tribute to Mike Berman (9th November 1950 – 16th April 2011)
Sadly in 2011 we lost a great friend and former colleague when Michael Berman passed away after a short illness in Kuala Lumpur, a city he was very fond of.
Mike, who is survived by his wife Jane and children Richard and Michaela, enjoyed a long and varied career within the aviation industry and was known and loved by many due to his straight talking yet very caring nature, sharp wit and wicked sense of humour.
Mike spent ten years working with Routes and ASM beginning his career with us in February of 2000 when he joined the then Route Development Centre at Chief Operating Officer, he lead the team in a very successful World Routes in Athens in 2002 before moving to the role of Principal Consultant for ASM in the October of that year.
A pioneer of the first Routes regional event, Routes Asia or New Route Asia as it started out, Mike was instrumental in securing the host contract for the first three years of that event (2003-2005) with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad whom he also worked hard to secure as the host of World Routes in 2008 when the event went to Asia for the first time.
Mike moved role within the company again December 2005 when he became VP Asia Pacific for Routes and was seconded to our office in Kuala Lumpur for two months in June 2008 and although he no doubt missed his family he enjoyed this time in one of his favourite places.
Mike’s final career move at Routes, during March 2009, before leaving the company in late 2010 was in a commercial role managing sales to Suppliers for our events and developing relationships and activities with industry trade associations. He was also responsible for making trade agreements with third party organisations to run co-located events. This role really suited Mike due his ability to form friendships and relationships with all who met him.
Mike is sorely missed by all of us here at Routes and no doubt by all those who met him.
