Our Route Opportunities feature explores the latest unserved and underserved routes promoted through Routes 360, providing supporting information for airline network planners to consider and capitalize on.
Nuremberg Airport (NUE) is located in the second-largest city in the German state of Bavaria and is expected to serve about 4.0 million passengers in 2024. Strategically nestled between the German hubs of Frankfurt and Munich, NUE strives to meet the needs of a densely populated and economically affluent region.
Serving a catchment area of around 5 million people, NUE benefits from a strong mix of business and leisure travel, driven by local industry giants such as Siemens, Puma, and Adidas, alongside inbound tourism demand such as international trade fairs and the world-famous Christmas market.
During summer 2024, Eurowings opened a base at NUE adding routes to Rome, Italy; Hamburg, Germany (starting in Winter 2024); Nice and Bastia, France. Meanwhile, British Airways began seasonal service from London Heathrow (LHR) on Nov. 28, targeting travelers visiting Nuremberg’s famous Christmas market.
For summer 2025, NUE’s route network continues to grow. Wizz Air will launch a 3X-weekly service to Varna, Bulgaria, starting in April 2025. Furthermore, the route to Chișinău (launched in December 2024) will be continued twice a week in Sommer 2025. Marabu Airlines is expanding its presence with two aircraft based at the airport, supporting new routes to Kavala, Greece; Olbia, Italy and Funchal, Portugal. Marabu will offer over 30 weekly flights to 12 destinations.
NUE’s growth is underpinned by its development strategy, the “Blue Ocean Airport Nürnberg” , which focuses on avoiding overcrowded markets while targeting high-demand unserved routes. This approach has supported its route development and marketing efforts, earning NUE the Under 5 Million Passenger category award at the Routes Europe Awards in April 2024.
With multiple incentives and zero slot restrictions, the airport has uploaded several unserved and underserved route opportunities to its Routes 360 profile, with key information regarding leakage, existing traffic flow and passenger profiles.
