VIRGIN BLUE SELECTS ATR 72 FOR REGIONAL EXPANSION

Australian carrier Virgin Blue Airlines has confirmed that it has selected the ATR 72 turboprop to support its regional network strategy as part of its recently announced strategic alliance with Skywest Airlines. The carrier will receive 18 ATR 72s comprising a mix of -500 and the new modernised -600 variant from the middle of this year. The first four aircraft will enter service in 2011, with a further four following in 2012. “The ATR is the best aircraft to operate on regional routes throughout Australia,” said John Borghetti, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Virgin Blue Group. “The ATR will form the foundation of our regional network plans, with the first six ATRs replacing our current Embraer 170 fleet and the additional aircraft flying to new regional destinations.” The ten-year partnership with Skywest will come into effect in the middle of 2011 and will cover existing and new destinations in the country, with Skywest and Virgin Blue offering codeshare connections across their domestic networks. Skywest is also planning to use a new fleet of the same aircraft type on coastal networks in Western Australia, having been recently preferred by the Western Australian Government for a five-year exclusive licence on flights from certain coastal ports to Perth.
