VIRGIN AMERICA HEADS TO FLORIDA
Virgin America will begin its first scheduled services to Orlando (MCO) linking the Florida destination from its West Coast bases of Los Angeles and San Francisco. The new routes will begin on October 6and will be operated on a daily basis. Virgin America already serves Fort Lauderdale from both LAX and SFO. It will face competition at MCO from American Airlines, United and Delta from LAX, and from United at SFO.
AIRTRAN CONFIRMS PUNTA CANA START DATE
Low-cost operator AirTran will begin serving Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic from its Atlanta base from February 16. The route will be operated twice-weekly with B737-700 equipment. It will compete with Delta Air Lines' weekly rotation operated with MD-88 equipment. IATA BSP data shows that over 23,000 O&D passengers flew Punta Cana from Atlanta between May 09-10.
JETBLUE AND AMERICAN INK INTERLINE AGREEMENT
JetBlue this week began its interline agreement with American Airlines. Importantly for the low-cost operator, the interline agreement covers 12 of American's international destinations - an important step for the JFK-based operator. The new agreement will allow JetBlue passengers access onto selected American Airlines international services. It is the latest in a series of moves by JetBlue to improve its international network in partnership with other carriers. It has also agreements with Aer Lingus, Lufthansa and South African Airways.
BA - SEVEN A DAY TO JFK
British Airways will resume a seventh daily flight from London Heathrow to JFK from December 1 with B777 equipment.
The following carriers operate 115 weekly services from LHR to New York JFK: British Airways - 42, American Airlines - 34, Virgin Atlantic - 21, Delta Air Lines - 15, Kuwait Airways - 3
IATA BSP data shows that over 1.8 million O+D passengers flew the sector (two-way) between April 09-10, with 34% flying with BA.
JETBLUE HEADS TO HARTFORD
Low-cost US carrier JetBlue Airways will open its first routes to Hartford (BDL) with a new twice-daily rotation from its Fort Lauderdale base. The new route will be the only year-round non-stop service between the city pairs and will be effective from November 17.
JetBlue is the third largest operator at Fort Lauderdale in terms of scheduled weekly seat capacity, with Spirit Airlines and Southwest Airlines first and second respectively.
