Meet The Winners: Perth Airport
Perth Airport (PER), the co-host of Routes Asia 2025, spoke to Routes about what it meant to be crowned the winner of the 5-20 Million Passengers category at the Routes Asia 2024 Awards in Langkawi.
PER achieved a record-breaking year during 2023, welcoming more than 15.3 million passengers. The airport’s international market has been a driver for growth, hitting 350,387 passengers in February—a 12% increase on February 2020 and 8% more than in February 2019.
The past 12 months have seen significant route activity for Western Australia’s capital, with Jakarta proving particularly popular. Batik Air launched its new direct service from Jakarta in September 2023, following Citilink and AirAsia Indonesia, which also connected to Indonesia’s capital earlier in the year.
Connectivity across Southeast Asia has also increased, with both VietJet and Vietnam Airlines operating from Ho Chi Minh City since 2023. Philippine Airlines’ inaugural service to Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) began in March 2023, a route initially scheduled to start in 2020. In March 2024, Thai Airways resumed its daily service between Bangkok and Perth, while Singapore Airlines returned to its pre-COVID frequency of 4X-daily services from Singapore.
Other successeincluded AirAsia Malaysia’s entry to the Australian market, operating flights from Kuala Lumpur. South African Airws have ays has also restarted its Johannesburg service, operating 3X-weekly, and Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) will recommence flights from Tokyo on Oct. 28, 2024.
Speaking at Routes Asia 2024 in Langkawi, Stephanie Juszkiewicz, senior vice president of aviation business development at PER, highlighted that China is one of the key markets the airport hopes establish air service to soon. She added: “One of the key fastest growing markets is India, where we are looking to establish nonstop connectivity to.”
Acknowledged for its excellence in airport marketing and partnerships in sustainable route development, PER received the award for the 5-20 Million Passengers category at the Routes Awards. Juszkiewicz said: “We are so grateful to be recognized by our airline partners for our route development achievements. I think it’s validation that our aviation recovery strategy has been sound, and the team has done a fantastic job executing that.”
As joint hosts of Routes Asia 2025, Perth Airport works closely with Tourism Western Australia as Team Perth to ensure air connectivity is as strong as possible. Speaking about the forthcoming event, which will take place in March 2025, Juszkiewicz added: “We are so excited to welcome all the Routes Asia delegates to Perth in 2025. We hope to showcase our beautiful city, its natural environment, and all the wonderful opportunities that await. I hope everyone has a wonderful experience.”
