ANA Aeroportos de Portugal has awarded a €233 million ($246 million) contract to modernize Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), marking the largest capital investment since Vinci Airports acquired ANA in 2013.
The contract has been signed with a consortium that includes Mota-Engil, VINCI Construction Grands Projets, Alves Ribeiro, and HCI. Work is slated for completion by 2027.
The modernization work centers on the expansion of Terminal 1 with the construction of a new 33,000-m² (355,000-ft.²) south pier. The pier will include 10 new boarding bridges and 12 aircraft parking stands.
Additionally, the project encompasses the remodeling of the Central Pier and the redesign of the south bus gates to further streamline operations and improve accessibility.
The upgrades aim to improve the passenger experience by enlarging the terminal and offering direct access to aircraft. ANA says that sustainability is a key focus, with high-energy-performance infrastructure and reduced vehicle traffic on the apron set to lower the airport’s carbon footprint.
LIS is served by 55 airlines at present, led by TAP Air Portugal with a 46.6% share of all departure seats in November 2024, according to OAG Schedules Analyser data. Ryanair is the airport’s second-largest carrier with an 11.3% share, followed by EasyJet on 9.5%. Overall capacity in 2024 will be about 20.4 million departure seats, marking a year-on-year rise of 2%.
The planned expansion of LIS comes six months after the Portuguese government announced plans to locate Lisbon’s new airport, to be called Luis de Camoes Airport, in Alcochete, about 20 mi. from the city center. It is hoped the airport will be operational by 2034.
