Gol is set to be the first carrier to directly link Brazil with the island of Barbados in the Caribbean
The new non-stop service between Sao Paulo and Barbados Airport (BGI) starts on June 26. The once-weekly flight should stimulate the Brazilian market to Barbados, which the Barbados Tourism Department is in the early stages of developing.
The route will be operated with a B737-800 aircraft, giving Barbados direct access to South America's largest economy.
Gol currently serves Aruba and Punta Cana using the same aircraft type with a technical stopover in Caracas.
As well as attracting strong leisure traffic, it is also hoped that the new route will stimulate business links between the two countries.
According to IATA BSP data (Airport IS), the most popular Caribbean market from Brazil is Cuba. Over 25,000 O+D passengers flew between these markets between January 2009 and January 2010, with the majority of passengers currently travelling via Panama City with Copa Airlines.
Gol Sees Demand Rise by almost 50% in February
Brazil's national airline reports that demand for its services grew by 46.9% year-on-year in February.
According to a statement issued by the airline, overall domestic traffic increased by 47.9% and international numbers by 40.3%, which the airline attributes to the growth in the economy in Brazil and Latin America. Its aircraft daily utilisation was 12.5 hours during the month.
