Regional, low-fare carrier Flybe is to provide regular flights between the Danish and Swedish capitals as its new European division strengthens its activities outside of the UK. Having established a presence in the Nordic and Baltic markets through the joint acquisition with Finnair of the former Finnish Commuter Airlines (Finncomm) in August this year, the UK airline is now further expanding its network into Scandinavia.
Flybe will offer three return flights between Copenhagen and Stockholm every weekday, as well as one rotation on Saturdays and two on Sundays. Altogether it will introduce over 1,200 additional weekly seats on the route in each direction. SAS and Norwegian between them offer more than 115 weekly flights between the two cities with over 21,000 seats for sale in each direction. An estimated 870,000 O&D passengers travelled between Copenhagen and Stockholm last year.
The new arrival on the route has one major operational benefit, which alongside its low fares will help it compete with its established rivals. SAS and Norwegian offer flights from Arlanda Airport in Stockholm, but by operating 68-seat ATR 72 turboprops on its own flights, Flybe will serve Bromma Airport, which is just nine kilometres from the city centre and offers much quicker access.
Flybe now offers service on 26 routes in the region and has the intention of becoming the largest regional airline for the Nordic and Baltic region. “This new route will open the fastest downtown-to-downtown connection between Copenhagen and Stockholm,” said Mike Rutter, Managing Director Flybe Europe. “Our high frequency, daily route between Stockholm and Copenhagen so soon after we started flying our first ever route to Tallinn, indicates our determination to continue introducing new services to and from Stockholm Bromma.”
