Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport (PVD) is setting its sights on international expansion, targeting new markets in the Caribbean, Mexico, Latin America and Europe.

With strong demand from the greater Boston-Providence region—home to 7.5 million people— Rhode Island Airport Corporation’s Assistant Vice President for Air Service Development Markus Berger sees significant potential for new international service.

“People traveling to and from the zip codes where PVD is the fastest-to-reach airport alone support 12.5 million annual passengers, so PVD has a lot of demand in its own right,” Berger tells Aviation Week at Routes Americas 2025.

The international push comes as PVD experienced a surge in passenger traffic and air service growth. With more than 4 million travelers served in 2024—surpassing pre-pandemic levels—the airport is now on track for a 27% increase in scheduled seat capacity for the first quarter of 2025.

“PVD has become one of Breeze Airways’ largest bases, with 19 nonstop destinations on Breeze alone,” Berger adds. “The newest routes are to Myrtle Beach, Savannah, Denver, Greenville-Spartanburg, Daytona Beach and Wilmington, NC.”

Breeze is also plotting further growth from PVD, with CEO David Neeleman recently announcing plans to increase the number of nonstop destinations served to 35 over the coming years, including seven routes to destinations west of the Mississippi, international routes and basing up to 12 aircraft at PVD.

Other airlines are also capitalizing on PVD’s growth. JetBlue has expanded its footprint with new daily nonstops to San Juan, Tampa, Fort Myers and, most recently, New York JFK. Southwest Airlines, PVD’s largest carrier, continues to increase service with new flights to Denver, Dallas and an upcoming Nashville route.

To support its network development efforts, PVD has launched a marketing campaign emphasizing the convenience of flying from PVD over larger, more congested airports, Berger says. Hyper-targeted digital ads inform travelers of new nonstop options, while collaborative marketing initiatives with airlines—ranging from event sponsorships to media partnerships—help promote routes.
