Peru welcomed 3.3 million visitor arrivals in 2024, marking a 29% year-on-year increase, with the much-anticipated opening of the new terminal at Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) set to provide a further boost to the country’s tourism and connectivity ambitions.

During Routes Americas 2025, Peru’s Vice Minister of Tourism Madeleine Burns Vidaurrazaga emphasized the significance of the new terminal in enhancing Peru’s aviation sector. The terminal will accommodate up to 30 million passengers annually once it opens at the end of the first quarter, with expansion plans to increase capacity to 40 million.

“The entire aviation community in the country is committed to successfully completing the operational transition process,” Vidaurrazaga told Aviation Week. “The goal is to ensure the full capacity of the new airport infrastructure to support the efficient growth of air service offerings.”

New international routes launched from Peru during 2024 included LATAM Airlines Group’s flights from LIM to Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Rosario, Argentina, while Turkish Airlines confirmed it will commence flights to LIM from June 2025.

“Lima Airport has continued solidifying its position as a hub in South America, with a higher volume of connecting flights to the region's main cities,” Vidaurrazaga said.

Looking ahead, Peru is prioritizing expansion into North American and European markets while also working toward securing access for an Asian airline. To support this growth, aviation and tourism authorities are collaborating with airport administrators to introduce an incentive plan, making it more attractive for airlines to launch new routes and expand existing services.

“Additionally, efforts to promote strategic alliances continue, fostering joint advertising campaigns between the Peruvian government and national and international airlines,” Vidaurrazaga said. “These campaigns aim to enhance domestic and international connectivity while promoting Peru’s tourist destinations through a diversified offering of airfares.”
