Seville Becomes Ryanair's 44th Base
Ryanair announced on Thursday (July 22) it will open its 44th base at Seville airport in November.
A largely domestic airport, Seville will become Ryanair's 8th Spanish base.
Ryanair will base two aircraft at the airport and launch ten new routes from: Bari, Eindhoven, London Gatwick, Marseille, Palma, Paris, Santiago, Valencia, Venice Treviso, and Zaragoza.
Including existing routes, Ryanair will operate 29 routes at the new base.
Blue1 Announces Munich Service
Finnish regional carrier Blue1 will fly non-stop from its Helsinki base to Munich, starting September 13.
The route will be operated with 717 aircraft, offering seat capacity of 120 passengers.
The Munich service is part of Blue1's strategy to capture a larger share of the Finnish business market by offering stronger connections, with the help of its star alliance partners, including Lufthansa, which also flies the route 21-times weekly. Finnair also offers the route on a 12-times weekly basis.
IATA BSP data shows that between May 2009 and 2010, over 157,000 flew between the city pairs from May 2009-2010. Lufthansa currently has a 57% share of the market.
Avianova Moves Into Kaliningrad
Avianova will fly from Moscow Sheremetyevo and Pulkovo airport in St Petersburg to Russia's exclave, Kaliningrad on October 31.
Since KD Avia filed for bankruptcy last year, Kaliningrad has had no based operator, creating new opportunities for Russia's low-cost carrier in the market.
Lufthansa Italia Adds Two New Routes
From its Milan Malpensa base, Lufthansa Italia will launch six flights a week to Catania and a daily service to Prague on November 1.
Both routes will be served with an A319.
To Catania, the carrier will face competition from Air One (Alitalia) (14-times weekly); Windjet (12-times weekly); Livingston (once weekly) and easyJet (19-times weekly).
To Prague, Lufthansa Italia will compete with CSA Czech Airlines (13-times weekly) and easyJet (7-times weekly).
BA Expands Swedish Network
BA will start flights from London Heathrow to Sweden's second largest city, Gothenburg Landvetter from November 28, 2010. easyJet currently serves Gotenburg on a daily rotation from London Gatwick.
The route will be offered twice-daily.
In Sweden, BA also serves Stockholm Arlanda fourty-times a week.
