Some airlines name aircraft after famous people, others after towns, rivers and mountains, but Turkish carrier Pegasus Airlines has developed an interesting concept for naming its new Next-Generation Boeing 737s – every arrival is christened with the name of the newest born daughter from the Pegasus workforce.
The ‘fleet of the future’ concept started in November 2007 with the delivery of the first of the B737-800s it has acquired directly from the manufacturer. The aircraft was named Hayırlı and has subsequently been followed by Hanım in January 2008, Gülce in August 2008, Ece in February 2009, Selin in June 2009, Merve in August 2009, Dilara in March 2010, Isik and Duru in April 2010, Sude Naz, Damla and Min & Nisa in June 2010 and Derin in July 2010. The most recent addition, delivered on February 3, has been called Nisa Nur after the newborn daughter of the airline’s performance manager Resul Ozdemir.
Pegasus now operates a fleet of 33 aircraft, including 15 new 737-800s and flies scheduled services to 18 domestic and 25 international destinations from its Istanbul base.
