UK budget carrier easyJet has announced it is backing UK actress Lorraine Chase to become ‘Queen of the Jungle’ in the latest series of UK entertainment show “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!” It is not often that an airline will come out and give its full support to a contestant in a show, but links between Lorraine and the airline date back years, even further when you consider her relationship with London Luton Airport, where the airline’s headquarters are located.
Lorraine was on hand to launch easyJet’s first ever route in 1995 helping to check-in passengers on its inaugural flight from London Luton to Glasgow. This was a role she recreated earlier this year when she helped the airline celebrate its 65 millionth passenger from the airport. But years before this, Lorraine kick-started her career with the immortal line “Nah, Luton Airport” in reply to the question "Were you truly wafted here from paradise?” to promote Campari, a fruit and herb based alcoholic drink.
The catchphrase stuck throughout her subsequent career and the advert inspired the 1979 hit music record ‘Luton Airport’ by Cats UK. You can quite often even here people mimicking the line when they pass through the London airport on their travels.
Lorraine is currently a long way from ‘paradise’ in a small camp in the Australian outback with a host of other celebrities. “We wish Lorraine all the best in the outback and everyone at easyJet is backing her to be crowed the Queen of the Jungle,” said Hugh Aitken, UK Commercial Manager, easyJet. “Lorraine is a true sport and will tackle every challenge with a smile and full gusto. To show our support we have pledged free flights for life from London Luton Airport if she wins, and for every bush-tucker trial she completes we’ll throw in a free flight for a friend too!”
