Ethiopian Airlines opened a revamped domestic terminal at its Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) base hub, with the facility’s size doubled.
The terminal serves as the connecting hub for Ethiopian’s domestic network, which includes 22 destinations. The airline operates more than 200 domestic flights daily.
The terminal now spans 25,750 m2 (277,170 ft.2), more than double its previous size, and baggage handling capacity has also doubled, according to the airline. The cost of the terminal revamped totaled $50 million, the carrier said.
“The expanded terminal features modern airport systems and facilities including four contact gates, 10 remote-departure gates, 22 check-in counters with automated hold baggage screening system, self-check in kiosks, a modern security-screening system, a premier passengers’ lounge and a multitude of various airport facilities and amenities,” Ethiopian said in a statement. “These enhancements will streamline passenger flow, improve comfort levels and enhance the overall travel experience.”
CEO Mesfin Tasew said the remodeled terminal “is a significant addition to our initiative of modernizing and renovating airports and aviation facilities in the country,” adding that “demand in domestic travel is growing.”
The airline said new domestic flights from ADD are coming soon. “Plans are underway to open several additional airports in the coming months, including thrice-weekly services to Nekemte and a daily flight reinstatement to Axum,” Ethiopian said.
