EasyJet plans to establish a base at London Southend Airport (SEN) during the summer 2025 season, marking the airline’s 10th in the UK.
The carrier will station three 186-seat Airbus A320neo aircraft at the airport and launch six new leisure routes from May 2025. Flights will be offered to Antalya and Dalaman in Turkey, Enfidha in Tunisia, Gran Canaria in Spain, Marrakech in Morocco, and Pisa in Italy.
The airline already serves Alicante, Amsterdam, Faro, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca and Paris Charles de Gaulle from the Essex airport during the current summer season, and it expects to announce further new routes for summer 2025 in the coming weeks.
EasyJet previously had a base at SEN since 2012 but ceased operations from the airport in 2020 due to the pandemic. Flights resumed in 2022, initially with service to Malaga and Palma.
Speaking about the base reopening, easyJet CEO Johan Lundgren said: “This will create hundreds of jobs and provide more choice for consumers with new routes and package holidays.
“Our continued growth and investment in the UK highlights the importance of the market where this year we will operate more flying than ever before with our customers choosing our flights and holidays because of our trusted brand, unrivalled network and great value fares.”
Aviation Week Network’s aviation consultancy ASM worked with SEN to help secure the new base. Consultant James Nicholls said: “Having helped guide the airport through its growth and recovery phase following the COVID-19 pandemic, today's announcement from easyJet is a major milestone in London Southend's growth story, and we look forward to our continued collaboration with the airport in support of their traffic objectives.”
EasyJet opened its ninth UK base at Birmingham Airport in March 2024 and has introduced around 70 new routes from the country this summer. The UK is carrier’s largest market, with 56% of all easyJet passengers flying to and from UK airports.
