Airport In Focus: Madeira Airport
Madeira Airport, also known as Funchal Airport, serves the island of Madeira in the Portuguese Atlantic archipelago of Madeira. The archipealgo is one of Portugal's two autonomous regions, together with the Azores, and is located 400km north of Spain's Canary Islands. The airport is unique in that its runway extension was built on a series of columns extending into the Atlantic. Being a tourism-heavy destination, the airport is seasonally served by a large number of European charter carriers, while Portuguese carriers TAP Portugal and SATA International offer a number of domestic and European connections. The airport also serves as a link to smaller Madeira islands like Porto Santo. ANA Aeroportos de Portugal operates the airport.
