Don Mueang International Airport is Bangkok's former primary international air gateway—now used mostly for LCC and regional flights.
Thai AirAsia is bolstering its domestic network by adding another point and its 34th route in the market.
From Oct. 1, the airline will open daily service between Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) in Bangkok and Lampang Airport (LPT). DMK is the former main international hub for the Thai capital, now used largely for regional and LCC flights.
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), opened in 2006, is Bangkok’s primary international airport. Bangkok Airways currently operates flights between BKK and LPT.
Thai AirAsia noted the city of Lampang is the largest in the northern Lampang province, as well as serving as the provincial capital.
“The demand for domestic routes has continued to rise, and AirAsia is matching the growth by continuing to connect the dots across Thailand,” Thai AirAsia CEO Santisuk Klongchaiya said in a statement. “In the first half of 2024, the load factor average for domestic flights at Thai AirAsia was 90%, thanks to both domestic travelers and international visitors.”
He added that he is “confident” the DMK‐LPT route will see similar demand.
Lampang is Thai AirAsia’s 25th domestic point. When the DMK‐LPT route opens, the carrier will operate 612 domestic flights weekly on 34 routes.
While the carrier has not flown to LPT, it has operated shuttle buses from Chiang Mai International Airport to the city of Lampang, a journey of around 65 mi.
